My reflection about reading
In the pictures presented, we can see people reading in different contexts: in class, in a library, at home, etc. All individuals are engaged in their reading process, but they are reading for different reasons and with different types of books. For example, the student in class is likely reading a compulsory book chosen by her teacher, similar to the girl reading with, presumably, her mother. On the other hand, we see people reading texts of their own choice, like the man reading a newspaper or the individuals in the library.
From my perspective, this difference affects their perception of the reading process. Those who choose their texts are more engaged and likely enjoy it more, seeing it as a pleasure rather than a chore.
I experienced this as a student myself. Looking at the picture of the student in class, I sometimes felt discouraged reading compulsory books imposed on us, viewing them as obligations. However, when given the opportunity to choose texts, as the people in the library picture are doing, I enjoyed the reading process much more (and still do).
Regarding the types of texts I read now, I usually try to mix English and Spanish. However, it's true that in some areas, I prefer one language over the other. For example, I tend to read news or forums in English because there's more updated information and more people to interact with. Conversely, when I want to disconnect from work, I indulge in reading texts in Spanish.
In terms of format, I typically read online for news and use an e-reader for books, allowing me to take notes and carry many books with me. One of the main times I read is during my weekly train commute. Additionally, I enjoy reading before bed as it helps me relax.
Hello,
ResponderEliminarI find your reflection really interesting and I agree with you in most of the perspectives you share. I would just like to go a bit further in the reflection about compulsory readings chosen by teachers. Have you always found them discouraging? I have sometimes done, nevertheless I have also experienced a great interest in this kind of reading practices. They have often become extremely enriching for me, and now, as a teacher, I understand how important it is to chose the correct text (especially books) and to focus on the main points we want students to learn.
I hope you find my reflection useful,
Best regards,
Miriam
